A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) is a significant release of plasma and magnetic field from the Sun’s corona, which is its outer atmosphere. These eruptions can launch billions of tons of solar material into space at high speeds, often exceeding millions of miles per hour.
CMEs are associated with solar flares and can cause geomagnetic storms when they interact with Earth’s magnetic field. These storms can disrupt satellite operations, GPS systems, power grids, and can also produce spectacular auroras, commonly known as the Northern or Southern Lights.
In essence, a CME is a massive burst of solar wind and magnetic fields rising above the solar corona or being released into space.
